The committee voted to report House Bill 2897 to the full Senate with the recommendation that it pass. The bill authorizes the Joint Committee on Government and Finance, together with LAISA, to request the Legislative Auditor to conduct performance audits of the West Virginia Department of Education and county boards or local districts that use state funding. The Legislative Auditor would be given authority to inspect records and accounts of the Department and examine personnel, while protecting legally protected information disclosed to the Auditor.
Counsel explained that the bill also allows review of productivity and meeting standards while preserving local control, and requires the Legislative Auditor to complete an initial performance audit of the Department by Dec. 1, 2025, and deliver a report to the Joint Committee on Government and Finance and to LAISA on that date. There were no amendments recorded in committee and the vice chair moved to report the bill to the full Senate with recommendation that it pass; the motion was adopted by voice vote.
