The Lewiston City Council voted to authorize a six-month extension of an option agreement with the Lewiston Auburn Community Market (LACM) for the city-owned property currently occupied by the Lewiston Police Department.
Director of Economic and Community Development Nate Libby told the council the extension would allow the community market group additional time to complete due diligence and secure financing; the police department is scheduled to vacate the site when its new station in the Basin Street/Mill Number 7 area opens. Libby said project timelines of this scale “typically experience some form of delay or another,” and staff recommended approving a six-month extension to the option agreed in January 2024.
Becky Conrad, a representative of the market group who attended the meeting, told councilors the group has advanced its operations plan and secured a substantial portion of project financing. “We’ve secured a significant amount of financing already,” she said, and asked for council support to give the group time to complete its plan.
The council approved the order by voice vote (7–0). Staff said the extension formalizes a prior drafting approach that converted an 18-month agreement with a six-month extension into a single 24-month option period, as outlined in the city memorandum.
Next steps: The city and market group will continue due diligence work and, should the market group proceed to a purchase or lease, will return to council with the purchase documentation and required approvals.
