The presentation framed the work around three pillars: digital wellness, digital citizenship and digital instruction. Panel members said the committee’s recommendation is to teach responsible use at elementary levels, focus on digital privacy and online safety, and introduce supervised use of generative AI beginning in grades 8–12.
Staff guidelines described in the meeting: presenters said staff may use AI for personal productivity and lesson support but must not use it to replace high‑quality instructional materials or to input personally identifiable information into external tools. For students, the committee recommended a phased model: no open generative AI access for grades K–7, teacher‑approved and parent‑consent‑based use for grades 8–12, with teachers controlling classroom permissions (described informally as a stoplight model: red=no, yellow=teacher permission, green=allowed under rules).
Training and instructional supports: the district outlined a phased professional‑development plan with levelled sessions beginning in the summer, targeted training during the year, and on‑demand campus support. Student lessons and verification skills (how to check AI outputs) will be embedded into secondary instruction; the district proposed quarterly AI lessons in secondary schools and age‑appropriate digital wellness instruction in elementary grades.
HCISD AI assistant pilot: staff demonstrated a district‑built prototype teacher/administrator AI assistant created by Andres Gonzalez (a teacher identified as part of the innovation pod). Presenters said the prototype is a React/TypeScript full‑stack application configured to retrieve or surface district resources (curriculum files, calendar items, policies) and produce classroom materials such as quizzes and scaffolded writing prompts. Staff emphasized the prototype is in beta and that ongoing training, data governance and security testing remain to be completed.
Privacy and app vetting: district presenters described an app‑request and vetting process for third‑party AI tools to ensure data privacy and compatibility with existing infrastructure. Approved AI‑integrated tools named in the presentation included NoRedInk, Adobe Express, Curapod and Microsoft Office with Copilot; presenters noted the approved list will evolve as tools change.
Community and next steps: the district plans parent engagement sessions (in‑person, virtual and on demand) and said it is exploring grant funding and philanthropic partnerships to build and sustain the HCISD AI assistant. Presenters said a phased rollout, teacher training, parental consent mechanisms and data‑privacy safeguards must be in place before expanding classroom access.
