North Penn ECI details multi‑year curriculum review, recommends algebra, ELD and AP adoptions

The North Penn School District's Elementary and Curriculum Instruction (ECI) Committee reviewed the district's multi‑year curriculum review cycle and recommended several adoptions for the coming school year during its April virtual meeting.
The committee described a repeating six‑year review cycle that starts with needs assessment and research, moves through curriculum development and implementation, and cycles back to monitoring and revision. "We always are thinking about our diverse learners. We have 13,000 students in our schools," Dr. Pam Hart said, describing the district's need to select resources that reach multilingual learners and students with different skill levels.
The recommendations brought to the committee included: the Algebra II title Algebra 2: Concepts & Connections (Cengage/Big Ideas, 2025) for implementation in 2025–26; new English language development (ELD) resources for secondary ELD courses (Get Ready, Get Reading from Vista; LIFT from National Geographic/Cengage); and updated Advanced Placement texts for AP United States History (Give Me Liberty, Norton), AP Psychology (Myers, Bedford, Freeman & Worth) and AP Economics (Krugman's Economics for AP, Bedford, Freeman & Worth). "Each chapter [of the recommended Algebra II text] features a specific career focus," said Melinda Lyon, the district's secondary learning coach for math, noting the series' career links, statistics emphasis and online student supports such as CalcView and CalcChat.
District staff said the Algebra II resource was piloted in both middle and high school by several teachers and that committees used Pennsylvania high school math standards, SAT eligible content and Common Core guidance when evaluating options. For ELD and AP materials, curriculum teams used needs assessments and instructional materials evaluation tools; AP selections referenced College Board recommendations.
After presentations and brief questions from committee members, the committee voted to move the set of curriculum adoptions to the board's May action meeting for formal approval. The motion to move the adoptions to action was made and seconded and passed unanimously.
The committee said implementation planning, including professional development and technology alignment, will follow any formal approvals. Dr. Hart and curriculum staff noted the district will coordinate training and pilot work and emphasized that timing of expensive adoptions is considered alongside the business office to manage fiscal impact.
The committee scheduled the adoptions for formal community review and the May action agenda; staff said the public will have access to materials before final board votes.
