Alamo Heights ISD outlines smart snack purchases and parental controls

A staff member from Alamo Heights ISD nutrition services said the district's cafeterias at Cambridge, Woodridge and the Junior School offer a variety of "smart snacks" that meet district nutritional standards and are available as a la carte purchases. The announcement was made during the meeting's informational items.

The district advised parents to visit the Nutrislice site for their school to review snack offerings, nutritional information and allergy or special-diet filters. The staff member said parents can reach Nutrislice by going to ahisd.Nutrislice.com or by using the menu quick link on their child's school homepage.

Parents who want to limit when and how often a student can buy smart snacks were directed to create or sign into a SchoolCafe account at SchoolCafe.com/AlamoHeightsISD and to use the "purchase restrictions" setting. "Smart snacks are available daily, and parents can determine when, if, and how often their child can purchase them," the staff member said.

The announcement said individual snack items can be clicked to view ingredient and allergy information, and the Nutrislice filter icon can be used to exclude items by allergy or special dietary needs. The staff member advised parents to work with their school nurse to document any allergies or dietary restrictions so that cafeteria staff are informed.

For further questions about smart snacks or meal accounts, the district advised contacting the student's school cafeteria manager.

The guidance applies to daily a la carte snack purchases at the three named campuses; no changes to meal plans, prices or district nutrition policy were announced during the meeting.
