Advisory board approves naming of new Riverside parcel as Aviata Park

The Fort Lauderdale Parks & Recreation Advisory Board voted to recommend renaming a newly acquired parcel at 501 Southwest 12th Avenue to Aviata Park.
Deputy Director Amy Jean Baptiste told the board the Riverside Park Residence Association requested the name and provided historical documentation. She said the HOA had approved the proposed name and that the board’s role was to consider the naming request before forwarding it to the city commission.
Baptiste explained the parcel had been acquired through the parks bond and currently does not have an official name. A board member asked for clarification that the renaming applied to the newly acquired parcel only and not the larger Riverside Park; Baptiste confirmed it concerned the specific parcel acquired through the bond.
A motion to approve the renaming was made and seconded; the board conducted a roll call and the motion passed. During the roll call several members individually stated “yes” on the record.
The advisory board’s approval is a recommendation to the city commission, which must take final action to formalize the name change.
