York County Crime Stoppers seeks volunteers, public tips and donations

Wayne Heffner, president of York County Crime Stoppers, briefed the board on how Crime Stoppers operates, how anonymous tip rewards are handled and on current reward funds available for unsolved crimes.
Heffner described two typical paths: a member of the public calls in a tip or a law-enforcement agency requests Crime Stoppers' assistance and potential reward advertising. Rewards, Heffner said, are paid from the nonprofit group's bank account in Aurora; callers receive a unique Crime Stoppers number and collect the cash anonymously if their tip leads to a conviction. "It's completely anonymous," Heffner said, describing the tip-number and pickup process.
Heffner said Crime Stoppers has returned value to victims by facilitating recoveries and aiding convictions and that the group is volunteer-run with modest operating expenses for phone and postage. He said the group has about $1,500 in reward funds available and specifically noted a $500 reward posted for thefts at Kluties near Bradshaw and a separate up-to-$500 reward for stolen pivot-wire and for a trailer break-in during the previous year.
Heffner asked the community to donate, provided a PO Box address for donations and urged people interested in volunteering to call the number on his handout. He also said the group uses local media, radio PSAs and social media to publicize tips and rewards.
Heffner's contact and reporting numbers were distributed on handouts at the meeting.
