Council approves contract to design Williamson Avenue improvements

The Opelika City Council on April 1 approved a professional services agreement with CAI Engineering LLC to design improvements to Williamson Avenue, an industrial road between Society Hill Road and Marvin Parkway.
Scott Parker of the city’s engineering department told the council the street carries heavy industrial and construction traffic and is in poor condition. He described two techniques the consultant will evaluate: full-depth reclamation — blending the existing pavement with cement in place — and roller-compacted concrete, which city staff said can bear heavy truck traffic and cure faster than traditional concrete.
Parker said the selected contractor will design detour routes so essential facilities such as the nearby concrete plants and the garbage transfer station can remain open. “We’re looking to have a resolution to hire a group called ACAI, to design this roadway improvement for Williamson Avenue,” Parker said. He added the roller-compacted concrete can be opened to traffic in two to three days, reducing long detours.
During council discussion, staff said the firm will perform the technical design, including pavement thickness and detour planning. Resolution 15 on the council agenda authorized the professional services agreement with CAI Engineering LLC; the council voted to approve that resolution as presented.
The engineering department will work with CAI to finalize design details and return with construction cost estimates and a recommended schedule.
