Ferrell said the cemetery conducts about 250 interments a year and that existing equipment is often too large for marker installation and other work: "we do about 2 50 interments a year" and the smaller machine "would just make life so much easier for tuning upgrades, sinkholes, installing markers."
Ferrell and cemetery staff also flagged timing as a practical concern: they said the New York State bid that provides an 18% savings for this equipment was expiring, and negotiating a new contract could take months, potentially pushing purchase into the cemetery's busy season. A county staff member identified as Renee from the Department of General Services said that if the appropriation is approved by the legislature, general services would try to expedite the procurement.
The committee approved the appropriation by voice vote; no opposing votes were recorded on the meeting record.
The county intends to use the compact machine for marker installation, minor excavation and additional implements in the future such as street sweepers, plows and snow blowers as needs arise.
