Public Works reports plan to replenish salt stockpile, orders ~1,518 tons; cost and tariff risks noted

Staff reported on the villages municipal salt purchase and said the village plans to commit to about 1,518 tons for the next winter season to replenish what was used and maintain the level of commodity stockpiles established last year.
Public Works staff said the village had larger purchases last year (about 2,700 tons) and maintains storage in a Fond Du Lac dome as well as on a new campus site. Staff noted the last two years have seen lower salt use rates and that increased use of brine and tighter spreading practices (telemetry-tracked operations) contributed to reduced salt tonnages.
Using last years price, staff estimated roughly $90 per ton for state contract salt; for a 1,500-ton order that would be approximately $135,000, and tariffs on Canadian salt could increase costs. Staff said the DOT ordering window is short and that going forward they will bring authorization requests earlier in the calendar cycle to align with the committee schedule.
No committee vote was required on this agenda report; staff will return with an authorization request in a future meeting if needed.
