Chautauqua County approves 10‑year lease for county law office in Mayville

The Planning & Development Committee approved a resolution authorizing a 10‑year lease for county legal services to occupy the former Dr. Burke’s office building in Mayville.
County staff said the 7,500‑square‑foot lease will permit the law department to move to the first‑floor space; the move creates a "domino" of relocations in the county building: Office for the Aging (OFA) would move to the third floor so the public defender can expand on the first floor, staff said.
Committee members raised concerns about unpaid property taxes connected to the property owner. Jody Peterson and county staff reported a certified letter from a bank showing an approved loan that will pay the outstanding taxes in full before the county moves forward with the lease. Josh Roswell, who said he oversees county facilities and leases, attended to answer operational questions.
The committee first voted to take the previously tabled lease resolution off the table and then approved the lease by voice vote.
Ending: County staff will proceed with the lease steps required to relocate the law department; the lease includes tenant and financing conditions described by staff and requires the property taxes be settled before final execution.
