Albany County District Attorney seeks cost savings with Bethlehem range agreement for firearms certification

The Albany County Legislature approved authorization for the District Attorneys Office to enter into an agreement with the Town of Bethlehem to use the Bethlehem Police Departments shooting range and training facility for annual firearms certification.
The District Attorney (speaker identified as the countys DA in the meeting) said the office has taken several cost-saving measures and sought the Bethlehem range to reduce training costs for investigators. He said the anticipated cost is $250 per visit, not to exceed five visits or $1,250 a year, and contrasted that with earlier spending "at least $3,000 a year" on a private vendor. He noted the new arrangement could save more than 50% compared with the previous contract.
The DA said his office has roughly 10 to 11 investigators requiring certification and that Chief of Investigations Adam Hornick also maintains certification. The DA was joined at the meeting by his chief compliance and ethics counsel, Pat Collins.
Legislators approved the agreement by voice vote with no recorded opposition. Members asked whether county-owned ranges or the sheriffs range could be used; the DA said the Bethlehem range had been the most cost-effective option when he priced alternatives.
