Board recognizes county youth basketball champions and parks‑schools partnership

Board member Mr. Duffy introduced Matt Dennison, superintendent of Floyd County Parks and Recreation, who described expanded programming and the county championship events. “We started a first‑ and second‑grade developmental league for New Albany‑Floyd County students only… We had over 230 kids from the nine different elementary schools sign up,” Dennison said, adding that the program is intended to serve as a feeder into the third‑and‑fourth‑grade competitive division.
Dennison also credited volunteer coaches and school staff for supporting the program, saying many principals and teachers attend weekend events and that volunteer head coaches — 13 of whom this year were non‑parents — help run teams. He noted a new noncompetitive cheer program that included third‑ and fourth‑grade participants and said the parks department is “very close to making an announcement” about introducing third‑ and fourth‑grade volleyball next season.
The board individually introduced and photographed the Greenville girls county champions and the Floyd’s Knobs boys champions; coaches named in the transcript included AJ Fleming (Greenville girls) and Brian Maggard (Floyd’s Knobs boys). Several athletes were named during introductions (transcript lists players by team). The board thanked the athletes and coaches and took a group photograph.
The recognition segment concluded with a district reminder: April is Prevent Child Abuse Month, and the district will display the message on school marquees.
