Committee approves recommendation for Complete Streets projects on South and North Main Streets

The committee recommended adding a new Complete Streets project covering sections of South Main Street and North Main Street in downtown Waterbury to the region's project program.
Kevin, identified as a staff member, described the scope as streetscape and complete-streets improvements on South Main between Green Street and Skilville Street and on North Main between Phoenix Avenue and the northern leg of West Main at the Green. He said the work was split from an Exchange Place Phase 2 project and was separated because those sections were not fully designed earlier.
Committee members discussed queuing and funding. Members emphasized that projects are typically built when design and funding align and noted the region tracks a financial plan to place projects in sequence. "If money is available and it doesn't cause a delay, anything else, it can go," one committee member said.
A motion to recommend allocation of funds to initiate the project was made, seconded and carried by roll call. Committee members were notified that the motion places the project in the regional queue; it does not guarantee immediate construction and additional design work remains.
Staff said the city of Waterbury and project sponsors will be advised about potential timing and that communities are informed when a project is placed in the queue.
