Planning commission grants special-use permit for private training studio on Oak Hill Road with parking and lighting conditions

The Pittsylvania County Planning Commission on April 1 approved a special-use permit (Case S-25-010) allowing Timothy and Kimberly Barber to operate a private recreational facility — described at the hearing as a personal training studio — on 95.6 acres along State Road 862 (Oak Hill Road) in the Tunstall Election District.

Mrs. Ragsdale read the staff recommendation into the record and noted the approval was conditioned on two standard requirements: that parking be provided on-site in accordance with Pittsylvania County Code section 35-82, and that any exterior building or parking-area lighting be shielded or directed so it will not impact adjacent property owners. Katie Ingram, introduced by staff as the petitioner’s representative, described the business as a smaller-scale personal training studio serving community members — including free gym access for senior citizens and employer-provided memberships — and said access is primarily by key fob. Ingram said classes are typically held at 5 a.m. and in the afternoons and that, outside daylight hours, the only frequent nonmember users are firefighters from the Roswell Fire Department.

After the public hearing closed, Mr. Oakes moved to issue the special-use permit with the two staff conditions; Mr. Webb seconded. The motion carried 6 yes, 0 no.

The permit grants the use subject to the stated conditions; any future changes to hours or operations would require review under applicable county code.
