At the March 31, 2025 meeting the chair of the Northampton Historical Commission reported five Community Preservation Act (CPA) applications in the historic‑preservation category and updates on two commission‑led initiatives: a prospective National Register nomination for Laurel Park and a newly funded outbuildings inventory.
The chair said one CPA application is a city project sponsored by the Department of Public Works: historic graystone conservation work at West Farms and Park Street cemeteries. Another application is the commission’s proposed preliminary work on a National Register nomination for Laurel Park; if funded the commission will take on that nomination work. The three remaining CPA applications are from local historic nonprofits: the Ruggles Center, a Daughters of the American Revolution house on South Street, and Historic Northampton. The chair said the Ruggles and the DAR projects include ADA‑compliance work and that Historic Northampton applied for continuing work on a historic costume collection.
Michael Curtin, the commission’s liaison on the Abolition and Reform District National Register nomination in Florence, said he had been in touch with Steve (last name not given) and that the nomination documents were sent to the Massachusetts Historical Commission earlier that week; Curtin said he expects a response and possible adjustments after the state review. Curtin said he participated in a walkaround to help map district boundaries.
The chair and staff member Sarah reported they have begun the outbuildings inventory funded in the previous CPA round; they said they will begin by surveying properties already in the local historic districts and the National Register district and will provide an update at a future meeting.
Separately, the commission approved minutes from its Feb. 24 meeting. Commissioner Greg moved to approve the minutes; Commissioner Hannah seconded. A roll call vote recorded Greg, Hannah, Michael and Douglas as voting yes and the chair declared the minutes approved.
