Maverick County applies for Texas Parks and Wildlife recreational trails grant for new 2-mile path at county lake

Maverick County Commissioners voted unanimously to adopt a resolution authorizing a grant application to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for a recreational trails grant to build a new trail at Maverick County Lake.

The county’s presenter said the application proposes a new roughly two-mile recreational trail intended to encircle Maverick County Lake; officials called it a new construction project rather than a renovation of an existing path. “We are gonna encompass the entire Maverick County Lake and try to get it to go around the lake. It's gonna be a brand new one,” the presenter said.

The presenter told the court the grant program allows applications up to $600,000 and requires a 20% local match. Staff said final project length and the exact amount requested will be determined once engineers confirm linear feet and terrain considerations; the application deadline was noted as Monday.

Why it matters: A new trail would add a publicly accessible recreational amenity around the county lake and could complement planned fitness amenities previously discussed by staff.

Commissioners asked whether cities, counties or nonprofits may apply; staff confirmed cities, counties and nonprofit organizations are eligible. Staff also noted that the city of Eagle Pass previously received recreational trails funding.
