Hillsborough County’s Math Homework Hotline devoted its March 27 edition to scientific notation, hosts Kinella Prado and Lisa Arias told callers and viewers during the live, call-in program. The show invited students to call (813) 840-7260 for on-air help, prizes and a chance to win a “Math Gems” plaque and a program T-shirt.
The program focused on why scientific notation is useful and how to apply exponent rules for multiplying, dividing, adding and subtracting with powers of 10. Prado and Arias demonstrated converting between standard and scientific notation, worked through practice problems and guided on-air callers through answers.
The hosts said the episode aimed to make scientific notation approachable for students who will use it in science and engineering coursework. “That’s right, scientific notation,” Lisa Arias said when she introduced the topic. Kinella Prado led several worked examples and reminded listeners of the hotline phone number and online resources.
During the show the hosts explained key rules: write a single nonzero digit before the decimal in scientific notation; positive exponents move the decimal right (multiplying by powers of 10) and negative exponents move it left (dividing); multiply by grouping coefficients and adding exponents; divide by subtracting exponents; and add or subtract only after matching powers of 10. They demonstrated converting 0.0017 to 1.7×10^-3 and 1.23456×10^5 to standard notation by moving the decimal place the indicated number of places.
Hosts used live problems to illustrate the rules. One challenge question on the board read: “In 02/2009, the population of Puerto Rico was approximately 3.98 × 10^6 people. How many significant digits are there in the population of Puerto Rico?” A caller identified as Avnish, who said he attends Williams, answered on air: “My answer was 3.” Avnish explained his reasoning on-air: “the 10 to the power of x is not that important because it’s like a magnitude. The numbers, and then the 3.8 is our base.” Prado confirmed that the digits 3, 9 and 8 are the significant digits in that notation.
Another caller, Elijah from Progress Village (teacher identified as Miss Morales), worked with hosts on converting between standard and scientific notation and on placement of decimal “bunny hops.” Hosts also guided callers through story problems that used scientific notation, including a division example that compared quantities (1.35×10^2 pounds vs. 0.12 pounds) and a rate problem that converted speeds in scientific notation to time over a fixed distance.
The program awarded on-air prizes and announced teacher and student contest standings. Prado and Arias named several recent winners and listed teachers on the leaderboard by school: Miss Hickerson (Loosk K-8, fourth place), Mister Cooper (York K-8, third place), Miss Rosato (Maniscalco K-8, second place) and Miss Ferguson (Williams, first place). Avnish’s picture and prize delivery to his school were announced during the broadcast.
Sponsors were highlighted: Edgems was credited for providing the “Math Gems” plaques and a QR code linked to lesson videos; Mathnasium of South Tampa provided a prerecorded sponsorship message describing local center services and locations. The show’s hosts encouraged students and parents to use the QR-coded videos for guided practice and to call the hotline for live help.
Prado and Arias closed by previewing the next episode’s theme—statistical measures (mean, median, mode and range)—and reminded listeners the hotline will return the following week for more practice.
