Councilmember Fernandez requested time to reopen discussion about fluoride added to the city water supply after members of the public raised the issue at a prior meeting. At the April 1 meeting council members noted Plant City, Lakeland (reported) and Miami-Dade had recently moved to remove fluoride or were considering removal, and that state-level action was imminent.
Council discussion centered on timing and practicalities: several council members said that current state legislation and the governor were expected to act quickly and that any local effort to change fluoride treatment now could not precede state action. One council member observed that if the state bills are enacted they will likely take effect July 1. Given the timing and the difficulty of convening a special meeting and assembling expert testimony before the state’s bills progress, council agreed to wait for the state outcome. Council members also agreed they would schedule a city-level discussion if the state does not adopt the expected changes.
Why it matters: decisions about fluoridation are executed by the utility authority and can involve public health, regulatory and budget implications. Several council members emphasized the need for a thorough local discussion if the state leaves the matter to local utilities.
Council direction: No formal vote was taken. Council agreed to wait for the state-level legislative outcome and, if the proposed state action does not occur, to schedule a local discussion and possible action.
