Commissioner George Gault reported a local artist, Myles Woods, submitted a quote of $6,825 to paint the mural, which Gault said covers "time painting materials and necessary lift." Gault and other commissioners said the palm tree in front of the mural will obstruct the work; Gault noted a city estimate to replace the tree is about $1,200 and said the city may not approve removal.
The chair said the mural proposal "was presented at the last city council meeting and it has been approved by the city manager," and commissioners discussed returning with final cost figures, including the artist's total and any tree removal cost. Members agreed Esteban, the city liaison, would circulate updated numbers to commissioners and that the subject should be placed on the next MPAC agenda if further action is needed.
No formal motion or vote on the mural itself was recorded at the meeting. Commissioners also discussed coordinating with city staff (Nick) for final pricing and protective coatings and noted the project is expected to be a visitor draw along Mesquite Boulevard and Sand Hill.
The commission deferred further decisions until staff can provide a final total for the artist contract and any tree-removal costs; the item will be carried to a future agenda for more formal action if needed.
