The Mesquite Redevelopment Agency on March 18 approved a $125,960 contract with Simpson Coulter to provide architectural construction administration services for the city’s new Fire Station 2 project.
Travis (city staff) presented the contract and told the board the fee will be paid from redevelopment agency funds allocated to the Fire Station 2 project. "This is the architectural construction administration services that Simpson Coulter will provide for Fire Station Number 2," Travis said. He added that construction management for the station and the animal shelter will be performed by city staff in‑house rather than through an outside construction manager.
Board Member Fielding moved to approve the contract; a board member seconded and the board voted to approve the $125,960 contract. Board members discussed how the fee fits into the station’s overall budget: staff said it will be drawn from the Fire Station 2 construction estimate (previously presented at $8.7 million) and that the low construction bid of about $7.7 million provides room for these additional project costs, including testing, furnishing and other services.
Questions from board members covered whether a separate construction management contract would be needed; Travis said city staff (Zach Robinson and Brandon Bentley) will perform in‑house construction management and capital projects oversight. The board opened and closed a public hearing on the item with no public comment.
The board approved the contract; staff said additional project‑related contracts and furnishing costs may come forward later and will be charged to the Fire Station 2 project budget as items are finalized.
