Kaye McKee, introduced by the chair as the sole public commenter, outlined several outreach activities: 26 teams had signed up for the county's high school Sustainable Design Challenge scheduled for April 15, staff helped with a teacher institute day, the "Wonder About Your Water" exhibit was being delivered to the Villa Park Library for the month of April, and a full-day water-immersion program for sixth-graders at J Stream Middle School was planned. McKee said, "We have 26 teams already signed up. It's tax day, so April 15." She also announced a garden market on May 3 at Scarce with food-scrap-amended compost available to gardeners.
On construction and flood-control projects, county staff (identified in the transcript as Sarah for several updates) reported that flood gates for the St. Joseph Creek project were in production and would arrive on site in May. Sarah said the gates were a multi-agency project, noting FEMA and county stormwater funds and ARPA money contributed to the work. "The project calls for installation of, I believe, 4 floodgates, possibly 5, between 3 different condo units," she said, and added that installation would proceed quickly once the gates arrive.
Sarah also provided a status update on Elmhurst Quarry pump station work: contractors were retrofitting piping and electrical systems and preparing to set pumps that were ordered a year ago. She said the quarry operates by gravity and that the county has an emergency pump-evacuation plan that uses rental pumps and piping if needed.
Committee members thanked staff for their work and noted the coming rainy season as a reason to complete installations quickly. No formal action was taken on these outreach items and project updates; they were presented as public comment and staff report items.
The committee's next meeting was announced as May 3.
