Council approves annual street mileage report; private roads reduce fuel-tax funding share

The Mesquite City Council voted Jan. 28 to approve the city's annual street lane index and public road mileage report required by the Nevada Department of Transportation.
Public Works staff reported the city has 150.68 centerline miles of road in total. Of those, 84.08 miles are maintained by the city, 0.38 miles are maintained by the Nevada Department of Transportation, and 66.22 miles are privately maintained. Public Works recommended holding the public hearing and approving the report.
In public comment, resident Gary Elgort asked whether the prevalence of private roads reduces the city's share of fuel-tax funding. Public Works Director Travis Anderson responded that it does: Regional Transportation Commission policies direct funding toward public roadways, so privately maintained streets can reduce the city's eligible mileage for some funding streams. He added that many private roads are built to narrower standards and may not meet requirements for city takeover.
Councilwoman Fielding moved to approve the street lane index and road mileage report; Councilman Wanless seconded. The motion passed (recorded votes included Fielding and Wanless saying "aye"; full roll call not specified).
