La Verne — The Board of Mayor and Aldermen presented certificates of appreciation to several Public Works employees and heard monthly reports from city departments at its April 1 meeting.
The board gave plaques to public works staff for their response during recent winter storms, thanking employees for keeping roads safe and maintaining city infrastructure. Mayor (unnamed in the record) presented the awards and singled out Christina Wright for after-hours communications work. Public Works staff member Michael Deets acknowledged the department’s everyday role in maintaining infrastructure and thanked the board for the recognition.
The board also received public safety updates. Deputy Chief Hatcher reviewed police monthly statistics, comparing February and March and year-to-date figures, and urged residents to report street racing or dangerous driving via 911 if there is an immediate threat or by 311 otherwise; Hatcher said videos and good witness statements are helpful. Hatcher also introduced two animal mascots assigned to the department, nicknamed “Duncan” and “Callie.”
Fire Department Chief Beasley reported that fires were down while calls were up and invited the board to a recent job posting and related activities. Danny Campbell of the water treatment plant said his unit is now fully staffed after hiring one operator and thanked other departments for support during winter storms.
Parks and Recreation reported upcoming community events: an Easter drive-through at Veterans Memorial Park on April 14 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. or while supplies last; a block party and “Touch-a-Truck” event at Veterans Memorial Park on April 26 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with 15 touch-a-truck displays and 39 vendors reported; a Beautification and Arts Advisory meeting on April 21 at 6 p.m.; and a Park and Recreation Advisory Committee meeting on May 19 at 5 p.m.
Donna Bebout, director of the La Verne Public Library, read a proclamation declaring April 2025 National Library Week and described programs including a children’s event and a staff showcase for National Poetry Month. Library attendance and circulation were reported as up for March.
Finance department staff Danielle Brown reviewed fiscal numbers: the transcript reports that expenditures exceeded revenues for the period by $122,000; sales tax collections for the same period exceeded last year by $225,000; property tax collection was reported at 95 percent and $175,000 more than the prior year at the same time. The report listed cash balances reported in the transcript as: general fund $33,800,000; water/sewer fund $12,500,000; and total across accounts $67,000,000. The presenter also referenced a reported net income figure of $3,500,000.
The meeting closed with reminders about upcoming city events, including an Aldi ribbon-cutting in Uptown La Verne and the April 26 block party. The board adjourned after routine announcements.
