The Southaven Board of Aldermen, meeting on election day, approved a series of procurement awards and routine dockets including a low bid to expand the city animal shelter, purchases of utilities equipment, and authorization of a Springfest sponsorship contract.
City Attorney Nick Manley told the board that the low bid for the animal-shelter expansion came from Walker General Contractors in the amount of $298,830 and that "the recommendation from Urban Ark is to award that bid to Walker General Contractors for the expansion and authorize the mayor to sign the contracts for the expansion project." The board voted to accept the recommendation.
The board also approved awards for utilities equipment after a reverse auction. The lowest bid for a JCB 86C mini excavator came from Briggs Equipment Company for $98,000, and the lowest bid for a compact loader — a Bobcat 1086 model — came from Williams Equipment Company for $99,008.95. Aldermen authorized procurement and acceptance of the lowest and best bids, with funding to come from the utilities budget as stated during the meeting.
Council members approved an agreement with South Port Marketing to sponsor Springfest for $5,000 under the terms of Senate Bill 2924 (local and private legislation as referenced at the meeting). The sponsorship will allow South Port Marketing to display two to three Chevrolet vehicles, post signage and receive reserved tickets; staff were authorized to finalize the contract and for Christie Faulkner to sign it on the city's behalf.
In routine business, the board approved donation, personnel and utility-billing-adjustment dockets and approved a claims docket totaling $1,805,674.64, including demand checks. In a legal-update item, the board also authorized payment of an $82,250 appraisal for an easement on a parcel referenced as South Pippy Parcel (Goodman Road) related to an MDOT project.
