Dr. Sandra Coley addressed the Board of Commissioners to request support for an annual blanket drive serving dialysis patients and their caregivers in Wayne and neighboring counties.
Coley described the problem: dialysis patients often endure cold treatment rooms and clinics lack sufficient clean blankets; over time some centers resorted to towels or residents bringing their own blankets from nursing facilities. Coley said last year’s drive — supported in part by county commissioners’ donations — supplied more than 50 blankets to six Wayne County dialysis centers. She announced this year’s drive will collect new twin-size blankets (in original packaging) and larger throws; the drop-off and program will be April 17 at 6:00 p.m. at the Wayne County Public Library on Ash Street, with donations accepted at 5:00 p.m. in the library parking lot.
Coley said she will initially serve Wayne and Lenoir counties and hopes to expand across Eastern North Carolina; she requested continued county support for the effort and thanked commissioners for prior donations.
Commissioners and staff noted logistics and staff assistance that help make the drive successful.
