Fallon County Commissioners approved a policy change that alters how holiday hours are calculated for part-time and seasonal employees, effective with the Jan. 25 pay period.
The change replaces a calculation based on scheduled hours with one based on hours actually worked in the pay period. Under the approved language, the county will determine the number of days in the pay period, total the employee’s hours worked (including sick leave and occasional leave but excluding overtime), divide total hours by the number of days in the pay period to compute a daily average, and use that figure to determine holiday hours (capped at eight hours).
County staff who proposed the change said the update aims to treat part-time employees fairly when they regularly work hours beyond their scheduled shifts. The presenters told commissioners seasonal employees and others scheduled 40 hours but who do not actually work the full schedule would be calculated the same way so holiday credit reflects hours actually worked in each pay period.
The commission moved to adopt the change at the meeting and voted unanimously to approve it. One presenter noted the change could be implemented immediately from the payroll side; commissioners requested a short memo documenting the calculation so payroll and departments can apply it consistently.
The item was presented and discussed at length by county staff during the work session; commissioners then motioned and adopted the new policy language.
The commission directed staff to memorialize the calculation and return with any necessary paperwork so payroll can apply the change starting with the Jan. 25 pay period.
