Mount Vernon City Council honors Junior Knights teams after championship season

City council members recognized three Mount Vernon Junior Knights teams — seventh grade boys, eighth grade boys and eighth grade girls — for recent championship seasons and praised coaches, volunteers and parents for their work on March 12.
Council President Danielle Brown and other members of the Mount Vernon City Council presented certificates of recognition March 12 to the Mount Vernon Junior Knights seventh grade boys, eighth grade boys and eighth grade girls teams following championship seasons.
The presentations highlighted the teams’ athletic success and the volunteer support behind them. Danielle Brown, council president, said the athletes had shown “grit, determination, and an unwavering commitment” and thanked coaches and parents for their time and sacrifice.
Councilman Javon Box Hill congratulated the players and coaches, saying, “He loves y’all,” and praising the personal development youth sports foster. Councilwoman Caitlin Gleason emphasized the discipline and teamwork the programs teach: “This really is the foundation of how you are able to move in the future.” Councilman Derrick Thompson said the council plans to invite students to sit beside council members in future meetings to learn how legislation works.
Head Coach Dwayne Murray and assistant coaches including Randy Scott and Jaden Scott joined coaches and team parents at the front of the chambers as individuals were called forward to receive certificates. Brown singled out coaches by name, including eighth grade boys coach Keith Benjamin and the eighth grade girls’ coaching staff led by Dwayne Murray, and thanked the “team moms” and volunteers for organizing games and travel.
Multiple council members and coaches urged community support for the program’s ongoing expenses. Councilwoman Gleason noted that teams need financial support — donations or in-kind contributions such as cases of water or Gatorade — and encouraged businesses and residents to sponsor the teams. Brown and other speakers also said the council had provided some funding from American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) allocations toward youth sports this year.
The ceremony concluded with group and individual photographs and an invitation from the council for some students to observe future council sessions. The council moved on to its regular legislative agenda after the presentation.
