Mount Vernon IDA staff reported an unauthorized occupant was operating an auto-repair business without utilities at an IDA-owned property at 229 South Fourth Avenue and the board moved to take legal steps to clear the tenant, the agency said.
Staff reported that the tenant had been operating without working utilities since the adjacent building was demolished and that the agency received an anonymous tip on Jan. 15 reporting activity and odor consistent with auto repair. The department of buildings and the fire department visited and verbally told the occupant to cease operations; staff said the occupant complied at that time. Because the property is IDA-owned and the situation raises legal and safety issues, a board member moved to go into executive session to obtain counsel’s opinion, and the board entered executive session.
After the executive-session discussion with counsel, the board reconvened in public and the chair said staff will proceed with “all of the necessary steps to ensure that the property is vacated.” No further operational details were disclosed in public session; a board member recommended continuing the legal discussion with counsel. The board voted to enter and exit executive session by roll call with Treasurer Darren Morton, Member Stephanie Vanderpool and Member Brian Johnson voting Aye and the chair absent. The board adjourned at 11:09 a.m.
