Montgomery Corral asks council for $10,000; YMCA Achievers student urges continued partnership

James C., artistic director of Montgomery Corral, asked the council for $10,000 to support a free Mozart Requiem concert on May 4 and to provide a deposit toward the Capital City Choral Festival planned for the following year. He said the Corral is one of the River Region's oldest nonprofit performing-arts organizations and wants to offer the concert at no charge and use community generosity to support future programs.
The artistic director said $10,000 would allow the group to offer the concert for free and put a down payment on the next-year festival; the request was met with a brief exchange but no formal vote or action was recorded at the work session.
Later, Natasha Foster of the YMCA presented the Achievers college- and career-readiness program. Keona Davis, a student who has participated since ninth grade, told councilors the program helped her prepare for college and secure scholarships; she said she plans to attend the University of Alabama on a full scholarship. Foster asked council members to serve as program partners; she provided an email address for program sponsorship and noted the program is free to participating students.
