Granite School District staff and trustees discussed a proposed revision to the district’s grounds‑use policy on April 1 that would prohibit dogs and other domestic animals from district school campuses at all times. The discussion followed principal and parent complaints about owners not picking up animal waste, student allergies, off‑leash animals and playground contamination.
District counsel and staff explained that making the restriction a district policy would enable municipal partners to cite violators more easily and provide a clearer enforcement tool for principals. "If they know that schools are banned on school property... they could then go take and make a citation," a staff member explained during the board conversation.
Board members reported mixed community reaction. Some said their schools host dog‑walking patrons who value access to green space and would be upset; others said principals experience recurring incidents and would support a ban. Several trustees suggested the policy be circulated first to site community councils and district community councils and that staff conduct a short survey before bringing a formal first reading back to the board.
No vote occurred. Staff said a survey and outreach to community councils would be conducted and the board reserved further direction pending that feedback.
