Council supports trial reciprocal pickleball play and tweaks to senior-center hours

Parks and Recreation staff proposed allowing Keller Senior Activity Center members to use the Keller Pointe gym for open-play pickleball during times the Pointe is not programmed, and to adjust senior-center operating hours on several days to better match participation.
Staff recommended a reciprocal trial beginning as soon as possible at the Pointe (Wednesday mornings, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.) for Keller Senior Activity Center members using their membership card, at no extra charge. The proposed long-term rollout would begin July 1 to allow marketing and brochure production, with a trial period to assess take-up. Staff noted the Pointe will retain scheduling priority for youth programs and camps during the summer, and the arrangement would stop during those periods.
For the senior center schedule, staff proposed moving Tuesday closing from 8 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., extending Thursday hours to 6:30 p.m., and increasing Monday/Wednesday/Friday closing times from 4:00 to 4:30 p.m. Together the changes raise the facility's weekly open hours from 41.5 to about 44 and add two hours of programming at the Pointe for pickleball. Staff said the changes could be implemented with a compressed workweek schedule for employees, avoiding the need for new hires.
Councilmembers supported the trial and asked staff to publicize the change through email, social media and signage, to coordinate surveys of members, and to return with usage data after the trial. Staff said it would begin marketing and would aim to start the July program period on July 1; the reciprocal play at the Pointe could begin as an immediate trial if council desired.
