The Centerville City Council unanimously adopted Ordinance 2025-04 on April 1 to update Chapter 10.03 of the Centerville Municipal Code and align the city’s construction codes with the State of Utah’s adopted 2021 editions of the model codes.
City staff member Lisa explained the changes are largely required: the city must adopt the same code editions the state accepts. The package updates include the 2021 residential and building code provisions, a residential pool and spa code provision, modular building standards, and guidelines for rehabilitating historic buildings when owners obtain qualifying tax subsidies. Lisa said the city will return later this year with additional local amendments required by legislative changes (HB 313) that take effect July 1, 2025.
Why it matters The ordinance brings local permit and inspection standards into parity with state requirements, reducing local deviations and clarifying which appendices and provisions are in force. Staff noted limited discretion to deviate from the state-adopted language, but the city can pursue specific local amendments through the state process if needed.
Vote Councilmember motioned to adopt Ordinance 2025-04 and the motion passed unanimously (5–0).
Ending Staff said building-inspection and enforcement staff will work with the updated code text and that the city expects to bring any narrowly targeted local amendments to the council before July.
