Fire department reports staffing churn; council to explore joint hiring with Brown Township

Mooresville fire department leaders told the Town Council on April 1 that the department has issued conditional offers to address staffing shortages but has encountered setbacks, and that it plans to explore a joint hiring process with Brown Township.
A fire official said the department issued two conditional offers in recent weeks. One candidate failed to meet PERF (Police and Fire Pension Board) requirements and one who began work left after three days to accept another position in another city. The department said it will request reimbursement of PERF costs from the other agency where applicable and will continue processing the remaining candidate who is undergoing physicals.
With continuing shortages, the department said it will consider drawing from its part-time roster and is discussing a first-time joint recruitment process with Brown Township and the Brown Township-Mooresville Fire Territory to expand the applicant pool. "Basically, you just start going down the list and if they need one, they'll take the top one first and then it just kind of rotates," a fire official said, describing how other joint processes have worked.
Department staff said they expect at least one candidate to be ready by May after completing required medical and PERF steps. The council did not take formal action on hiring at the April 1 meeting; staff will continue recruitment and coordinate with Brown Township officials about a joint process.
