Board recognizes new National Board-certified teachers, state champions and student winners

The Harrison County Board of Education paused business on April 1 to recognize teachers and students for professional and extracurricular achievements.
Dr. Bridget Phillips from the West Virginia Department of Education congratulated Harrison County's National Board candidates and maintenance certificants and described the national board process as a demanding, multi-year professional commitment. "For those of you that are not familiar with national board certification, the honorees that are here tonight have completed their initial national board certification or maintenance of certification... research shows that your initial certification can take anywhere between 2 and 4 (years)," Dr. Phillips said.
Board members and staff honored three newly certified teachers named in the transcript as Sonia Lembling, Isabella Pheasant and Amy Straley, followed by several maintenance certificants (Kathy Cox, Amanda Harris, Katie Jendroska, Bethany Koltop, Jennifer Oliverio, Kelly Shuttleworth, Laura Trent and Jennifer Sikafus). The district organized a reception following the ceremony.
The board also presented a certificate to Grant Shriver of Bridgeport High School for representing West Virginia at the 2025 Microsoft Office Specialist U.S. National Championship and recognized multiple athletic accomplishments: Washington Irving Middle School boys basketball as Mid-Mountain 10 conference champions, Bridgeport High School boys basketball as state champions, and Bridgeport boys and girls swim teams for regional accomplishments. Several individual athletes and coaches were called forward for recognition.
