Representatives of local veterans organizations told commissioners they plan a Veterans Fishing Day on May 17 from 7 a.m. to noon at Elton Dean Senior Park, inviting active‑duty service members, retirees and their families to fish and use park facilities.
Speakers included Ed Witherspoon, commander of American Legion Post 1918, and Willie Leonard, event coordinator. Witherspoon said the event will showcase community appreciation for veterans and that the American Legion and other local organizations are sponsoring the event. Leonard said he will distribute pre‑release information to the commission and invited county officials and their families to attend.
Chairman Kendall and other commissioners thanked the organizers and noted the county helped with financial support to host the event. Presenters said the lake has been restocked with bass and catfish and encouraged attendance.
"We are delighted and excited about putting on this event for the city of Montgomery...I am personally inviting each of you to come out on that day, May 17, from 7AM to 12 noon," Ed Witherspoon said.
This presentation was made during the public‑comment portion of the meeting; no formal county action was recorded on the transcript.
