Sheriff’s office requests temporary unbudgeted position to backfill lieutenant on military deployment

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office told commissioners it needs an unbudgeted position to backfill a senior lieutenant in the Criminal Investigations Division who is deploying on a long-term military assignment.
Assistant Chief Deputy Wes (Wesley) Richardson described the deployment, saying the lieutenant will be gone for more than three years and the department cannot sustain the unit without a leadership position. Richardson said the county will absorb some costs because the deployed employee receives 168 hours of military leave and then will be on leave without pay, so a portion of the position’s cost is already budgeted.
Chairman Kendall asked whether the sheriff had any objection to a liquor license application earlier in the meeting; the sheriff indicated no objection. The lieutenant backfill request was presented as an unbudgeted position request and staff indicated it will return on the next agenda for formal consideration.
"He's gonna be gone for over 3 years, and we just can't sustain without a leadership position for that one," Richardson said.
No formal vote was recorded on the transcript; staff indicated the request will be considered on a future agenda.
