Veterans services reports higher caseloads, new hire and benefits totals

Peterson said his office’s fiscal‑year budget is “sitting at 58.5%,” below expectations for this point in the year, and described ongoing monthly expenditures to meet demand. He said a new employee will start next Monday and that any remaining funds will be applied to that position for fiscal year 2025. Peterson said client demand remains high; in February the office served 1,109 local veterans and reported that county veterans received nearly $6.8 million in federal benefits in that month alone.
He said the office expects to serve about 1,230 veterans in the fiscal year and that demand increased after the PACT Act; serving veterans who are homeless or at risk is a growing part of the department’s work. Peterson described regional job‑networking events that brought employers and veterans together and said a VA claim clinic scheduled in April aims to allow some veterans to start claims and receive decisions the same day when applicable.
Peterson thanked Supervisor Rogers for support of the veteran services program and noted ongoing concern among veterans about potential VA cuts, though he said the office had not yet seen direct negative impacts from those cuts.
