Clark County officials flag low childhood immunization and influenza coverage, plan targeted outreach

Clark County Public Health staff told the Board of Health and the Public Health Advisory Council that routine childhood immunization and seasonal influenza uptake have fallen since the pandemic and that the county is pursuing community-specific outreach.
Investigation and Response Director Dana Wynne reported that the county's kindergarten MMR coverage is 89.9%. Wynne said, "For kindergarteners with MMR, we're currently at 89.9," and noted that the standard herd-immunity threshold for measles is about 95%.
Public Health Director Alan Milnick added that influenza vaccine uptake this season is also low, estimating that about 26% of the eligible population (ages 6 months and older) had received influenza vaccine at the time of the meeting. Staff said long-term care residents and other vulnerable groups have experienced substantial declines in vaccine coverage since the pandemic.
To address local pockets of low coverage, staff described an outreach effort using a consultant to work with the Russian- and Ukrainian-speaking communities to better understand causes of hesitancy and build trust. Milnick and staff emphasized qualitative engagement (focus groups, key informant interviews) to shape culturally appropriate strategies rather than one-size-fits-all approaches.
Board members discussed setting measurable goals (for example, MMR or influenza coverage targets) and developing metrics to track progress through community health improvement plans and targeted interventions.
