Martin County value board adopts special magistrate recommendations, approves legal agreement extension

The Martin County Value Adjustment Board on March 31 unanimously adopted the special magistrates' recommended decisions in the 2024 value adjustment cases and approved consideration of an extension to an agreement with the law firm Gordon and Pfalitzer for legal services.

Board attorney Erin Thawitzer summarized the purpose of the meeting and the packet before the board, saying the recommendations were prepared by the special magistrates the board hired and noting that “if the Board does have any issues with any of those recommendations, the appropriate action for the Board would be to identify the issues” so counsel can work with the magistrate or schedule a hearing.

The adopted list included multiple recommended reductions in assessed values. During discussion a large numeric entry drew attention: an item listed as “780,000” for a Property Tax Alliance Group case was identified as a typo. Leila from the property appraiser's office said a corrective decision had been sent and that the entry “should be 7,800,000.0.” Citizen appointee Diane Castellucci noted the correction materially changed the scale of the reduction, saying, “Should be $77,800,000.0. Yeah. Which is a lot more.” The board did not change the adopted action on the record and approved the magistrates' recommendations as presented.

Later on the agenda, the board took up an agreement with Gordon and Pfalitzer concerning payment for legal services and voted to approve consideration of an extension to that agreement. Both the motion to adopt the special magistrates' recommendations and the motion relating to the Gordon and Pfalitzer agreement passed by unanimous voice vote.

The board also approved the meeting agenda and minutes from Sept. 17, 2024, at the start of the session. With no petitioners present and no further public comment, Chair Commissioner Sarah Hurd closed the meeting and the board recessed.
