The Pierce County Council approved Ordinance O2025-506 on March 11, 2025, declaring a county-owned 2010 John Deere excavator surplus and authorizing its sale. The ordinance passed by roll-call vote, 7 ayes and 0 nays.
Rebecca Chapman of council staff told the council the ordinance is presented to comply with Pierce County Code 2.11.0.03, which requires council approval before selling surplus personal property valued at $50,000 or more. Based on county depreciation records, the excavator’s assessed value was stated as $50,723 and proceeds were described as returning to the equipment rental and revolving fund.
Brett Fisher of Planning and Public Works explained the county’s surplus process: finance maintains a list of local municipalities that are offered the item first; if no local municipality purchases it, the county uses a contracted auction house (Murphy’s Auction in Marysville) to sell the item to the public with no reserve. Fisher said the county generally receives good resale results.
Council members asked clarifying questions about the auction logistics and contract arrangements. With no public testimony, the clerk called the roll and the ordinance was adopted 7-0.
