The Pierce County Council and Executive proclaimed the week of March 2025 as Volunteer Recognition Week and announced a volunteer recognition event scheduled for Saturday, March 15, at the Clover Park/McGavitt Center.
Kyle Wintermoot, acting director of Pierce County Parks and Recreation, briefed the council on the program and awards, saying the county will honor eight groups and 55 individuals for their volunteer service in 2024. The county’s volunteer-recognition committee recorded 16,869 hours of service from those honorees; using a conservative $18-per-hour estimate, the committee calculated those hours equal $303,000 in contributed labor.
The proclamation named individual award winners, including Volunteer of the Year Joan Whitlock and group awards including the 4x4 Search and Rescue unit. Wintermoot noted the program recognizes volunteers of all ages and roles who support county services from search-and-rescue to master gardeners and tutoring.
Council members thanked volunteers and staff who organized the event. Councilmember Cooper said she appreciated the work that goes into coordinating volunteers and noted several volunteers from her district would be honored. Councilmember Ayala highlighted the role volunteering plays in fostering belonging and career exposure for youth. Vice Chair Herrera and Council Chair Jani Hitchens also praised the volunteer network and encouraged broad public recognition of volunteer contributions.
The county will host the recognition social at the Clover Park Technical College megawhatever conference space listed in the proclamation, with remarks from County Executive Ryan Mello and Council Chair Jani Hitchens.
