Resident alleges King County departments are slow-walking and concealing public records requests

A member of the public told the King County Council that several county departments are not producing public records in a timely manner and are concealing documents; he asked the council to address the issue before it becomes a legal matter.
At the March 25 meeting of the Metropolitan King County Council, a resident said he believes King County departments have failed to comply with public-records obligations.
Nick Russimovich told the council he had submitted public-records requests to the King County Sheriff's Office, the county clerk, risk management and the county jail and alleged the offices have "been claiming they have over 1,500 public records requests" and are slow-walking or concealing responsive records. He said he had requested official bonds for council members and the district court and that those records had not been produced.
"The King County Sheriff's Office continues to do the same thing, and they are basically slow walking all of the requests," Russimovich said, and he urged the council to address the problem before it becomes a legal issue.
The comments were delivered during the public comment period; no county response or staff report on the record addressed the allegations during the meeting.
