Loudon police announced a series of operational and community items to the Board of Selectmen: a drug take-back day scheduled for April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the police department, a state grant opportunity to acquire rugged laptops (Toughbooks) with no financial match, and progress on recruiting a candidate who received a conditional offer.
Dana (role: Police Chief) said the drug take-back event has been combined with a food drive for the local pantry and that the department has had good community turnout in prior years. The chief described the state grant for in-car laptops as covering hardware costs with no town match; installation or programming fees through the town's IT provider Mainstays would be the only anticipated local costs.
On staffing, the chief said two candidates attended oral board interviews; one received a conditional offer subject to background checks and a polygraph and could be scheduled to the police academy in August if all steps are successful. The department also completed Leeds training for Corporal Gamble that will restore in-school instruction and expects to coordinate programming with the school principal for the fall term.
The department is also pursuing vehicle markings for a recently approved cruiser, exploring stop-stick procurement costs for cruisers, and intends to deploy a speed trailer to gather data on roads where residents have complained about speed, including School Street.
The chief encouraged selectmen to approve staff applying for the state grant; board members expressed no objection to pursuing a zero-match grant that would modernize in-cruiser equipment.
The police chief concluded by noting National Night Out will take place Aug. 8 at the Rec Fields and that the department will partner with the fire department and others on the event.
