Des Moines County proclaims April 2025 Child Abuse Prevention Month; community groups outline events

The Des Moines County Board of Supervisors approved a proclamation April 1 declaring April 2025 as Child Abuse Prevention Month and urging citizens to support programs that promote safe, stable, nurturing relationships for children and families.
Erin Jones, who coordinates a four-county child-abuse-prevention program and represents Des Moines County Cares, told the board about month-long activities and local supports. “We meet on the second Monday of the month at 1:00 at the Burlington Public Library,” Jones said and invited partners and residents to participate in county events.
Jones highlighted a series of outreach items planned for the county’s observance: Friday’s Wear Blue day; a free screening on April 11 at 2 p.m. of the documentary Raising of America at the Capitol Theater; and a spring community baby shower on April 30, open to expectant parents and families with infants under four months. Jones said the baby shower provides education, community resources, a diaper bag of donated items and a short follow-up sequence of three months of additional information for participants.
The board voted to approve the proclamation and encouraged community groups to promote prevention and family-strengthening services.
Ending: Jones left printed materials and asked the public to help spread the word about local trainings and the April events; the county will carry the proclamation forward in local outreach.
