Sheriff requests $10,000 for firearms training fund; commissioners approve maintenance appropriation

The county sheriff's office requested and received approval for a $10,000 appropriation into the firearms training fund to cover ammunition, maintenance, vests and other training-related equipment.
Jesus Morris, chief executive for the West County Sheriff's Office, told commissioners the firearm training fund is used to buy training supplies, ammunition, replacement bulletproof vests and equipment needed to maintain officer certifications.
"The $10,000 that I'm asking for today is just kinda maintenance for our arms," Morris said, explaining that vests typically last four to five years and that agencies must keep officers trained and equipped. He said the fund previously came from local fees for permits and fingerprints; after a state change the revenue now arrives from the state and the department has been conserving the balance.
Morris said the fund balance was roughly "$90 to $100,000" and that he had been cautious about spending the balance in case state support changed.
Commissioners asked about frequency of training and equipment disposition; Morris said firearms training occurs "at very minimum, once a year," and up to two or three times a year for many officers. He described policies for end-of-life vests and that the department sometimes provides older vests for limited use when permitted.
A motion to appropriate $10,000 to the firearms training fund for training, vests and related equipment was moved and seconded; commissioners approved the appropriation by voice vote.
