County approves up to $60,000 to replace two waste-management vehicles after mechanical losses

The Dubois County Board of Commissioners approved an additional appropriation of up to $60,000 for the county waste-management district to purchase two used trucks to replace aging vehicles that became inoperable.
The district director described two separate vehicle losses: a high-mileage box truck (about 330,000 miles) that received an expensive December repair and was judged too costly to keep, and a small pickup (a Ranger) involved in a crash. The director said the district had received roughly $8,000 from insurance for the Ranger and deposited the check into the appropriate fund.
"So, basically, these are 2 vehicles that we've had for a really long time that just needed to be replaced, and we're replacing them with used vehicles," the director said, adding the $60,000 should cover both purchases.
Commissioners discussed condition, insurance recovery and that the purchases would be for used vehicles with mechanics already having inspected candidates. A motion to approve the appropriation was moved, seconded and carried by voice vote.
The district said mechanics had inspected several candidate vehicles and that one prospective box truck (a 2022 model with a lift gate and about 49,000 miles) had safety features valued by the district. The district expects to proceed only if funds are available and if the chosen vehicles meet inspection.
