SAFE youth advisory council presents programs, announces June empowerment events

Leaders and members of the SAFE organization’s youth advisory council spoke to the council about the group’s mission and programs and asked for continued support. The presenters described programs that promote Self-esteem, Advocacy, Faith and Education, including a No Texting and Driving campaign, an anti-bullying rally, Love Is Respect Day, teenage pregnancy prevention efforts and the signature Girl Empowerment Day.
Shanika Aiken, who introduced the group and identified herself with the SAFE organization, said the youth advisory council provides leadership and public-speaking opportunities for local youth. Jada Millhouse, identified as the youth advisory council president and a senior at the High School for Health Professions, described SAFE’s role in building leadership skills. Other youth presenters included Shanae Everett, Alasha Hamilton and Kirsten Thomas, who each spoke about how SAFE programming helped them gain confidence, teamwork and leadership experience.
Aiken announced a Women and Girls Empowerment weekend in June, described a benefits concert for SAFE and said the summit portion will be held at Claflin University; she identified the Stevenson Auditorium as the concert venue. The council applauded the young presenters; Mayor Butler and council members thanked SAFE for its partnership and support.
