Dr. Fabian McGill, principal of the Willie Jeffers School of Excellence, addressed the Orangeburg City Council on Jan. 2 to describe the school's growth plans and to ask for community engagement and support.
"We are here to set a precedence of excellence," Dr. McGill told council. He said the school currently operates from modular buildings on 5 Chop Road while completing its first phase of construction and preparing to begin a second phase with a target to move into a permanent building by the end of 2025.
Dr. McGill described the school's culture as a distinguishing feature and outlined academic practices including personalized learning plans tailored to each student's level. He said staff are creating clubs, activities and sports to keep students engaged and that the school was distributing pledge cards and flyers as part of fundraising efforts to provide student exposure and off-site experiences.
Council members and others in the audience welcomed the school's presentation. Dr. McGill invited community members to tour the school and to contact staff with questions or to contribute; no formal funding request or city action was taken at the meeting.
The presentation was primarily informational: Dr. McGill summarized the school's status, staff approach to individualized instruction, and near-term capital goals.
