The committee reviewed the current status of several decorated public benches and agreed to a short-term plan to photograph and inventory each bench so repair and repaint needs can be prioritized.
Members reported one bench is in county storage, another at the Reconstruction Museum may need cleaning or touch-up, and at least one bench (the Dragon Boat bench) may require repainting. A bench that had been refinished was reported as looking good. Committee members said they will walk the downtown route, photograph benches and circulate images within 24–72 hours so the group can identify which benches require a full repaint, which need simple cleaning and which might be covered under ongoing maintenance agreements.
The committee also discussed the Digital Corridor bench, which staff said needed a redesign that currently looked more like an advertisement than public art; the committee will follow up with Brian Canada (referenced) and others to request a design change. Members discussed the possibility of engaging an alternate artist if previously contracted artists are unavailable because of health or scheduling conflicts. No funding motions were recorded; members said the Center for the Arts may assist with some repairs and that some bench costs could be covered by committee funds or partner organizations.
The committee agreed to collect photographs and assemble a short maintenance list for review in the coming days.
